May 29 is Literacy Night

On May 29, Dewson will welcome the author and illustrator of Rabbit and Bear Paws, Chad Solomon. Mr Solomon will be presenting a Puppets performance: Rabbit and Bear Paws – The Way.

In this new interactive puppet theater, the author retells the Anishinabe Creation teaching of Nanabazhoo and the Animals. "Chad Solomon is a member of the Henvey Inlet, First Nation. As a child, he and his family would visit with his late grandparents in the French River Ontario area. His grandfather Art Solomon, a traditional healer and justice activist would spend his time building wooden toys and playing with Chad and his siblings. Even in winter, Art would go tobogganing with them. Learning from his grandfather, that no matter how old you become, you should always be young-at-heart and that laughter is the greatest medicine. I Am Not a Number by Jenny Kay Dupuis and Kathy Kacer. (2016). Grades 2 – 5.

A picture book based on a true story about a young First Nations girl who was sent to a residential school. When eight-year-old Irene is removed from her First Nations family to live in a residential school she is confused, frightened, and terribly homesick. She tries to remember who she is and where she came from despite the efforts of the nuns to force her to do otherwise.

La Pirogue de Shin-Chi by Nicola I. Campbell. (2011). Grades K – 2.

Shi-shi-etko s'apprête à retourner au pensionnat indien pour une deuxième année, cette fois-ci accompagnée de son petit frère de six ans, Shin-chi. Elle lui remet une pirogue de cèdre miniature, cadeau symbolique de leur père qui représente tout ce dont Shin-chi doit se souvenir et garder secret. Ils ne reverront leur famille que lorsque le saumon rouge remontera la rivière, à l'été. Les mois passés à l'école à apprendre des leçons, à travailleur dur et à assister à la messe sont longs et solitaires. Shin-chi a souvent faim. Pour se redonner de l'espoir, il se rend souvent sur les bords de la rivière, serrant fermement sa petite pirogue et surveillant le retour des saumons.

An Overview of Residential Schools, Elementary Version by McIntyre Media Inc. (2015).

Grades 5 – 8.

This video gives students an overview of the residential school system in Canada. Combining archival footage with residential school survivor interviews, students will learn why and how the schools were established, the effect of treaties on aboriginal life, the impact of residential schools on future generations, what life was like for children in these schools, and an appreciation of aboriginal culture and history. This is the story of Larry Loyie's last summer before entering residential school. It’s a time of great learning and adventure. The epilogue includes photos and information on the history and impact of residential schools.

This book is based on the true story of Margaret Pokiak-Fenton’s residential school experiences.

Goodbye Buffalo Bay by Larry Loyie with Constance Brissenden. (2008). Grades 5 – 9.

Buffalo Bay is set during Larry Loyie’s teenaged years. In his last year in residential school, Larry learns the power of friendship and finds the courage to stand up for his beliefs. He returns home to find the traditional First Nations life he loved is over. He feels like a stranger to his family until his grandfather's gentle guidance helps him find his way. This book is the sequel to As Long as the Rivers Flow.

Les Bas du Pensionnat: Une Histoire Vraie by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton. (2011). Grades 4 – 7.

Margaret est une jeune Inuit de 8 ans. Son désir le plus cher est d'aller à l'école pour apprendre à lire, même s'il lui faut quitter son village arctique. Sa famille tente de la décourager, mais rien ne peut la faire changer d'avis et c'est à contrecœur que son père consent enfin à la laisser partir. In the late 1800s, both the First Nations people and wolves are being forced from the land. Starving and lonely, an orphaned timber wolf is befriended by a boy named Red Wolf. Round Up by Narcisse Blood, National Film Board. (2010). Grades 5 – 6.

This short film traces Pete Standing Alone's personal journey from cultural alienation to pride and belonging. As a spiritual elder, teacher and community leader of the Blood Indians of Southern Alberta, Pete works with youth to repair the cultural and spiritual destruction wrought by residential schools. At age 81, he has come full-circle in his dedication to preserving the traditional ways of his people. See also NFB study guide below.

Sisters and Brothers by Kent Monkman, National Film Board. (2015). Grades 5 and up.

This short (4 min.) film draws parallels between the annihilation of the bison and the devastation inflicted by the residential school system. Once 75 million strong, wild bison were slaughtered almost to extinction by European settlers by the 1890s, both for their hides and as part of a larger policy to eliminate the main food source of the First Nations of the plains. Around the same time, residential schools were established to remove Aboriginal children from their families in order to assimilate them into mainstream Canadian society. The powwow-step rhythms of Tribe Called Red’s “The Road” drive home the legacy of loss and pain inflicted by more than a century of abuse and neglect.
