I Am Not a Number by Jenny Kay Dupuis and Kathy Kacer. (2016). Grades 2 – 5.

A picture book based on a true story about a young First Nations girl who was sent to a residential school. When eight-year-old Irene is removed from her First Nations family to live in a residential school she is confused, frightened, and terribly homesick. She tries to remember who she is and where she came from despite the efforts of the nuns to force her to do otherwise.

La Pirogue de Shin-Chi by Nicola I. Campbell. (2011). Grades K – 2.

Shi-shi-etko s'apprête à retourner au pensionnat indien pour une deuxième année, cette fois-ci accompagnée de son petit frère de six ans, Shin-chi. Elle lui remet une pirogue de cèdre miniature, cadeau symbolique de leur père qui représente tout ce dont Shin-chi doit se souvenir et garder secret. Ils ne reverront leur famille que lorsque le saumon rouge remontera la rivière, à l'été. Les mois passés à l'école à apprendre des leçons, à travailleur dur et à assister à la messe sont longs et solitaires. Shin-chi a souvent faim. Pour se redonner de l'espoir, il se rend souvent sur les bords de la rivière, serrant fermement sa petite pirogue et surveillant le retour des saumons.

Not My Girl by Christy Jordan-Fenton & Margaret Pokiak-Fenton. (2014). Grades 1 – 4.

Two years ago, Margaret left her Arctic home for the “outsiders’ school”. Now she has returned home, excited to see her family. But Margaret’s years at school have changed her. She has forgotten her language and the skills to hunt and fish. Gradually, Margaret relearns the words and ways of her people. Based on the experiences of Margaret Pokiak-Fenton, this story makes the original memoir, A Stranger at Home, accessible to younger children.

Shin-chi’s Canoe by Nicola I. Campbell. (2008). Grades K – 2.

Shi-shi-etko is about to return to residential school for her second year, but this time her six year-old brother, Shin-chi, is going too. This sequel to the book, Shi-shi-etko, tells the story of their residential school experiences.

When I Was Eight by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton. (2013). Grades 1 - 4.

Margaret is eight and knows a lot of things. But she does not know how to read. She must travel to the “outsiders’ school” to learn, ignoring her father’s warning of what will happen there. Based on the true story of Margaret Pokiak-Fenton’s residential school experience, this story makes the bestselling book, Fatty Legs, accessible to younger children.

A Stranger at Home: A True Story by Christy Jordan-Fenton & Margaret Pokiak-Fenton. (2011). Grades 4-7.

Travelling to be re-united with her family in the Arctic, Margaret can hardly contain her excitement. It’s been two years since she left home for the residential school. But Margaret feels like an outsider – she has forgotten the language and stories of her people, and she can’t stomach the food her mother prepares. As she gradually relearns her language and her family’s way of living, she discovers how important it is to remain true to the ways of her people, and to herself. Based on the true story of Margaret Poliak-Fenton’s experiences.

An Overview of Residential Schools, Elementary Version by McIntyre Media Inc. (2015).

Grades 5 – 8.

This video gives students an overview of the residential school system in Canada. Combining archival footage with residential school survivor interviews, students will learn why and how the schools were established, the effect of treaties on aboriginal life, the impact of residential schools on future generations, what life was like for children in these schools, and an appreciation of aboriginal culture and history. As Long as the Rivers Flow by Larry Loyie with Constance Brissenden. (2005). Grades 3 – 6.

This is the story of Larry Loyie's last summer before entering residential school. It’s a time of great learning and adventure. The epilogue includes photos and information on the history and impact of residential schools.

Elle s'appelle Elodie by Marthe Pelletier. (2003). Grades 4 – 7.

Fred, qui a presque douze ans, veut avoir un petit frère depuis longtemps. Ses parents décident d'adopter un enfant: Elodie, une petite fille noire de trois ans. Margaret a dix ans et elle se réjouit à l’idée de rentrer chez-elle après avoir passé deux ans dans un pensionnat. Mais quand elle retrouve enfin sa famille, l'accueil n’est pas celui que Margaret espérait. Elle a oublié la langue de son peuple et a du mal à avaler la nourriture de sa mère. Elle est devenue une étrangère parmi les siens. En se réappropriant sa langue et ses traditions, Margaret va saisir toute l'ampleur de la nécessité de rester fidèle à ses racines ainsi qu'à elle-même. Her father finally agrees to let her go, but he warns Margaret of the terrors of residential schools. Margaret faces much cruelty from one of the nuns, but refuses to be intimidated and bravely stands up for herself. This book is based on the true story of Margaret Pokiak-Fenton’s residential school experiences.

Goodbye Buffalo Bay by Larry Loyie with Constance Brissenden. (2008). Grades 5 – 9.

Buffalo Bay is set during Larry Loyie’s teenaged years. In his last year in residential school, Larry learns the power of friendship and finds the courage to stand up for his beliefs. He returns home to find the traditional First Nations life he loved is over. He feels like a stranger to his family until his grandfather's gentle guidance helps him find his way. This book is the sequel to As Long as the Rivers Flow.

Les Bas du Pensionnat: Une Histoire Vraie by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton. (2011). Grades 4 – 7.

Margaret est une jeune Inuit de 8 ans. Son désir le plus cher est d'aller à l'école pour apprendre à lire, même s'il lui faut quitter son village arctique. Sa famille tente de la décourager, mais rien ne peut la faire changer d'avis et c'est à contrecœur que son père consent enfin à la laisser partir. Une fois à l'école, Margaret est confrontée à une religieuse cruelle. Elle travaille dur tout en rêvant au jour où elle pourra enfin quitter le pensionnat pour ne plus jamais y remettre les pieds. Red Wolf by Jennifer Dance. (2014). Grades 6 and up.

In the late 1800s, both the First Nations people and wolves are being forced from the land. Starving and lonely, an orphaned timber wolf is befriended by a boy named Red Wolf. But under the Indian Act, Red Wolf is forced to attend a residential school far from the life he knows, and the wolf is alone once more. Courage, love and fate reunite the pair, and they embark on a perilous journey home. But with winter closing in, will Red Wolf and Crooked Ear survive? And if they do, what will they find?

Round Up by Narcisse Blood, National Film Board. (2010). Grades 5 – 6.

This short film traces Pete Standing Alone's personal journey from cultural alienation to pride and belonging. As a spiritual elder, teacher and community leader of the Blood Indians of Southern Alberta, Pete works with youth to repair the cultural and spiritual destruction wrought by residential schools. At age 81, he has come full-circle in his dedication to preserving the traditional ways of his people. See also NFB study guide below.

Sisters and Brothers by Kent Monkman, National Film Board. (2015). Grades 5 and up.

This short (4 min.) film draws parallels between the annihilation of the bison and the devastation inflicted by the residential school system. Once 75 million strong, wild bison were slaughtered almost to extinction by European settlers by the 1890s, both for their hides and as part of a larger policy to eliminate the main food source of the First Nations of the plains. Around the same time, residential schools were established to remove Aboriginal children from their families in order to assimilate them into mainstream Canadian society. The powwow-step rhythms of Tribe Called Red’s “The Road” drive home the legacy of loss and pain inflicted by more than a century of abuse and neglect.
